New Finds 10 - May 10, 2001

Okay, here's the followup to last month's New Finds page. I told you I would report on that round bottom ginger ale and I can now that I went to Art's and took some more photos.

Art Pawlowski walked away from our show last January with a real sleeper. When he first showed it to me I said, "Nice bottle. Good find!" and didn't feel too bad because I thought I already had an example. Then I read the embossing and got jealous. I actually thought about beaning him over the head and taking the bottle and running. But I thought, "If I do that I'll have to take care of Pam and the dogs and their new house and fix the washer and noisy well pump and clean out the garage so she can park her car in it....." and all of this on top of listening to my own wife saying, "If you'd have gotten yourself to the show earlier you could have found it first." Then I'd have to bean her over the head and it would just go on and on and on. Sorry. I'm back now.

The bottle Art found is a round bottom AMERICAN // GINGER ALE // W. W. BOYNTON & CO. // NEWPORT. R.I. At first I thought it was an AMERICAN // GINGER ALE // GEO. P. HARVEY & CO. // NEWPORT. R.I.., which are pretty rare in their own right, so I was excited to find it wasn't. I believe this new example to be a reworked mold of the Harvey as the design and embossing is identical with the exception of the company names but I could be full of it.

The bottle to the left is a variant of iRI-598 (RI-454 in the book). This example is embossed GEORGE E. BOYDEN / CRESCENT / PARK / R.I. all in a slugplate on the front. The word REGISTERED is found at the front heel, not on the shoulder like the previously known Boyden. Also different is the placement of THIS BOTTLE / NOT TO BE SOLD which is found on the reverse heel.

The bottle to the right is one that was already listed but known in clear only. This amber CHEMICAL INDUSTRIAL CO. / R. DE ANGELIS / PROVIDENCE, R.I. U.S.A. is listed as iRI-191 online and RI-137 in the book.

Both of the bottles above came out of Art's private stash. Actually, Art and Pam have been busy little beavers, hitting all of the yard sales on the weekends and going on calls when they come up. They have picked up quite a few previously unknown bottles and those I'll share with you next time.

Until then, hors d'eauvers, mon chichi.

Oh, and by the way. YOU could contribute to this page, too! If you find something not listed in the book, please email the information to me at dandrews@littlerhodybottleclub.com so I can add it.
