An Ebay transaction
a few months back produced a previously unreported
RI flask.
The 7" amber pint,
strap side flask is embossed MAGUIRE
BROS / 32 BROOK ST. / PROVIDENCE, RI
in a slugplate. The lettering is not uniform as
the ROS in BROS is smaller than the B, and the
S is embossed higher than other letters. This
seems to have been done on purpose. RI is very
small, much smaller than other letters.
It appears that
Maguire Bros. and Providence were originally cut
into the mold and the street address and RI were
added after since the lettering is slightly different
and the street address is on an angle, giving
some room for the addition of RI.
There aren't many
known amber strap sides from RI so I feel that
the $38.00 price wasn't that bad.
A search through
the Providence items on Ebay turned up a bottle
which, if you saw it sitting on a table or a shelf
somewhere, you wouldn't have thought it was from
RI.
Embossed COMBINATION
/ LADDER CO.,
this clear, light weight, 5 3/4" bottle wouldn't
have drawn any attention at all if it weren't
for the eight panelled mug base. The seller stated
the bottle was a fire extinguisher bottle, to
be used as a replacement in a certain type of
extinguisher. He also stated the company, in business
around the turn of the century, was located in
Providence although it's not embossed anywhere.
After a few emails,
the seller confirmed it to be from RI since he
had a trade card and another piece of literature
from the company. A winning bid of $11.01 made
me the new owner. Before the transaction was completed,
the seller emailed me and told me there was a
trade card on Ebay like the one he had and the
opening price was pretty good. He already had
the card or would have bid. I took a shot and
ended up with the winning bid at $10.50.
