Hey! Long time no
see! Sorry it's been so long since I last updated
this page but I really didn't have much to report.
I did manage to get away for a while this past
summer and also attended the Chelmsford show in
September and got a nice surprise......
The wife and I took a much needed mini-vacation
to Jackson, NH a few months ago and I visited a
few of the area's antique shops up there. I saw
a couple of interesting things but nothing I wanted
to open my wallet for and absolutely nothing in
the way of RI bottles for my own collection.
On the way home
we stopped at a shop I had always wanted to go
in (but never did) on Rte. 16 south of Conway.
The place was bigger than I thought and there
was quite an array of decent items for sale but
very few RI bottles. I did manage to come out
of there with an unlisted stoppered apothecary
from Caswell Hazard for the amount of $12.00.
I couldn't remember if I had this example or not
and didn't know this was unknown until I got home
and added it to my list. I always check the book's
database also and was happy when I realized that
this was a "new find".
It is clear, round,
and embossed CASWELL HAZARD & Co. / CHEMISTS
/ NEW YORK / & / NEWPORT RI. The bottle
stands exactly 6" tall without the stopper.
I attended the Merrimack Valley BC Show & Sale
on September 24th and was glad I did. A couple of
fellow club members told me there were a couple
of RI flasks and a RUMFORD / CHEMICAL WORKS
bottle in a different color on a table in the back
corner. The flasks were gone by the time I got over
there but the Rumford was still there waiting for
me. I will never understand why this bottle didn't
get scooped up as soon as it hit the table.
The color is a dark
blue, not the teal blue you would normally see.
In 12 years of collecting Rumford items I have
never seen this color in any Rumford bottle so
there wasn't much hesitation when I paid the $25.00
asking price. The bottle was dug but the only
thing wrong with it is a shallow flake off of
the lip. And I could care less. The photo is a
little dark so you can't appreciate the true color
but you can get an idea of the difference in the
color. I also added a group photo below which
is also dark but it shows the difference between
the common teal green, the rare dark olive green,
this new blue example, and the extremely rare
and elusive aqua version.
Now, if I could
only find an amber one.......
