The iPunty Rod Internet Newsletter Of The Little Rhody Bottle Club

April 2000

This page is updated around the 1st week of every month

The next meeting of the LRBC will be held on April 11th at 7:30 p.m.

The topic will be "Animals & Related" items, such as veterinary bottles, milks with cows on them, a bug with a pin through it, etc., you get the drift.

Also, April is ELECTIONS month. Come on down and impeach someone! Only kidding.

Club News

March Meeting
Twenty members attended the March meeting. There wasn't any pressing club business or items of great importance so the discussion centered around upcoming shows and events.
Rob Fahey suggested forming a recruiting committee to see if we can get more people interested in joining the club as well as improving attendance at meetings. When we have special presentations we should open them to the public more. The ProJo has a "What's Happening" section that lists events of interest at different locations and local papers also have the same thing available.
It was suggested that we could list our meeting plans whether there is a special presentation or not. This might increase membership as well as attendance.
Rob volunteered to chair that committee so if you have any suggestions, please email him at: rob.fahey@berkshirecp.com

New Club?
No, not another bottle club, but a Digging Club. Pam Sroka suggested this idea and anyone interested should contact her at 508-399-6427 or on the web at: pjdiggs@aol.com . Pam thought that the club should be located in SE Massachusetts, possibly in the Attleboro area. She and Arthur have been meeting a lot of diggers from that location, some who have limited knowledge of bottles and others who know bottles but don't like digging alone (NOT A GOOD IDEA). Honest, neat, and respectful diggers are a must since you would be guests on someone else's property.
Rob told a story of approaching a man's house and knocking on the door expecting to go into a big story about what he wanted to do to this guy's yard. After Rob told him he wanted to look for bottles, the man said to ".... go ahead, just fill in the holes when you're done." That was it! Some people have the luck.....

Baltimore Show
Carl Pratt set up at the Baltimore, Maryland show. He reported that there were 1150 people through the door by 11 a.m.! This show has always been a "biggie" on the East Coast and well worth travelling to if you have the time. Anyone up for a road trip next year?

The Public Archaeological Laboratory Presentation
Sorry so many of you missed this program. Alan Levaillee gave a very informative presentation complete with a slide show. Pam said most of the slides were of how methodical digs are in comparison to bottle digging. Everything is done a centimeter at a time, not by the shovelful, and is documented completely.
Alan told of the very first archaeologist being Thomas Jefferson who investigated a mound in his yard.
Alan's company was responsible for a dig in North Attleboro where Arthur and Pam had had permission to dig for nearly a year and a half before the archaeologists came in. It Turns out that Art and Pam dug nowhere near the site where an indian manufacturing site had been. The archaeologists also uncovered a midden, an indian trash pit, which in the meantime has been paved over. The manufacturing site has been fenced in for future excavation when funds are made available.
This company is the same company that did the excavation at the Providence Place Mall when they found the foundation for the old prison. They uncovered evidence that the prisoners were not given the food that records show the warden paid for. Prisoners were given substandard foods and other products while incarcerated. Imagine that.

Apology Apology Apology
Pam sends her sincerest apologies for the lateness of the newsletter. She kind of blames the warm weather for making her forget stuff. And she says if you want to know what's going on, you should attend the meetings!
