Club News

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Now that I've had a couple days (and a six pack) to recover from the Little Rhody Bottle Club Annual Show and Sale Sunday, I wanted to give you a quick update. The overall opinion at last night's monthly club meeting was that the club had an excellent show! Complaints were basically non existent. Even the weather cooperated. In past years we've experienced snow storms, rain and severe ice storms the night before.
The show was sold out. We had 50 dealer tables, a club membership table and Rod Walck representing the Bottles and More Magazine. I can honestly say that we had people set up from 7 states. The final facts and figures are these. We had a total of 254 paid admissions including 35 early buyers. If we include the dealers, dealer's helpers and volunteers in the total count, we had over 350 at the show.
I don't think I was able to sit down for more than twenty minutes. For me, personally, it was the best Little Rhody Bottle Show ever! I bought a nice amber demi-john for $10 and also 2 really good bottles that I need to research. They were a tall purple cologne and a base embossed black glass porter with a string lip.
On behalf of the club I'd like to thank all of the volunteers who generously donated their time. They are Julie Narcovich, for the advertising, Jan Boyer, Dianne and Wes Seeman, Stanley Sorrentino, Denise Faubert, Russell Archambault, Tom Ross, Bill Rose, Rob Fahey, Mai Yang, Eric Correia, Gene McCain and Pam Pawlowski (That's me!! Art's secretary! Do you actually think he's talented enough to write this on his own?). I also had help from dealers who are not active club members.
At the show dues were collected from almost 2 dozen people. We sold 2 club books and a T-shirt.
Plans are already underway for improvements next year January 11, 2004.
I need to remind everyone it is a new year and it may be time to pay your dues. Some of you are paid up for years. Many years!
Spring is coming, which brings flowers, and ELECTIONS! I would like to step down as President, and allow someone else the opportunity to experience being the PRESIDENT!!

LRBC President
FROM OUR NEWSLETTER EDITOR by Julie Narcovich
Hello everyone and welcome to a brand 'New Year'! Has anyone made it this far with their New Year's Resolution? I haven't but I am still working on it. Christmas was great for me as you all know from my last newsletter. I am now a proud homeowner in debt! I also now have my own private area to spend all of my free time tending to this very newsletter. My son loves his toy room. It is half the basement! Paul doesn't have a set spot yet. He will sooner or later. My cat Bennett loves all the free space to run and she goes crazy over the birds and squirrels she can now see out the window.
In this January newsletter, you will find information on a few topics that I have recently read about from various places. I found them to be interesting and maybe you will too. Don't forget, club membership dues are due. Contact Arthur Pawlowski, our President or come to our next meeting, held on, February 11, 2003 at the Pontiac Public Library, 101 Greenwich Avenue, Warwick, RI, at 7:30 pm. We hope to see you there. The topic for February's meeting will be a Valentine's theme, so bring in any red or pink bottles you may have.

JANUARY'S MEETING by Julie Narcovich
January's meeting started at 7:37 pm with 17 members present, which includes our president, vice president secretary/newsletter editor and our librarian. The meeting started off welcoming our new member Peter McKenna, who was present and our other new members, Bill Henderson, Wayne Dixon and Bill Ruggieri Jr. (son of William Ruggieri Sr.).
We received thank you letters from both the American Cancer Society and the National Bottle Museum from Saratoga. We made two donations to the National Bottle Museum for 2001 & 2002. $100 for each year.
It has been voted on that our LRBC books be audited. Arthur Pawlowski and Ed Greer will be doing the audit, which was also voted on. An audit has not been done in a few years so the past 2 years will be audited.
We had a "Show Finds' show and tell. Arthur brought in 3 great finds from the show. An amber demi john, a purple bottle and a green porter. Bob Lanpher showed us another great display of milk bottle in which some he purchased at the show. Such as Carpenter's Dairy, Burton and Waterman's dairy. Rob Fahey brought in a fabulous green pickle and a nice pottery bottle. They weren't his though. Ha! Ha! Mark Bryant brought in a small and large Rubi foam for the teeth. The large he purchased at the show to go with his little one and also brought in a wonderful codd bottle and two post cards from Rocky Point, dating back to 1912 & 1916. Mark Thatcher brought in some great sodas, other various bottles and a pontil bottle dug from a 1600's privy. WOW!!! I, myself brought in my collection of marbles I have found at the beach, a T.E. Hickey blob and a food bottle. Thank you to everyone for your show & tell and comments.
We had a few comments/suggestions for next years show. We will be bringing a microphone and speakers to announce the various tables and other things going on. We also decided to have a raffle for a bottle or a 50/50 cash raffle. What do you think?
Elections are coming up in April. We will also be voting on a show committee coordinator to get volunteers assigned to certain duties. This way here we won't have bored volunteers with nothing to do. At least we had too many volunteers instead of not enough. Also, we voted to increase next years show admission from $2 to $3. But if anyone brings in the LRBC show add, they will receive $1 off admission.
Also at the meeting we discussed how our annual Little Rhody Bottle Club Show & Sale went…

LITTLE RHODY BOTTLE SHOW
The show was a great success!! Thank you to our many volunteers. Stanley Sorrentino, Jan Boyer, Eric Correira, Gene McCain, Bill Rose, Russ Archambault, Denise Faubert, Tom Ross, Wes & Diane Seeman, Rob Fahey and Mai Yang. Of course a special thanks to Arthur and Pamela Pawlowski for putting and holding everything together. We would also like to thank Rod Walck from BAM Magazine. Oh yeah, we all voted to get a subscription to BAM Magazine. There has been nothing but positive comments about the magazine. Many of the dealers that set tables up at the show made comments on how everything went so smoothly and they really enjoyed our 'chaos less' show!!
Okay, what you have all been waiting to hear…Drum Roll Please…The LRBC collected $230 from member's club dues. We sold one tee-shirt for $12 and three books, totaling $75. We had 35 paid early admissions and 219 paid regular admission, for a total of $963 collected from the door. With all that and the money from tables we profited in excess of $1500!!!

FYI
Have you seen Sothebys.com lately? This famous auction house now has their online auctions run by Ebay. Online merchandise includes not only the "high end" items you would
expect to see at this premier auction house, but also a selection of fascinating collectables. Take a look at: http://www.sothebys.com.
MORE FYI
An important word about photos and sunlight. You might know that a visible color has a lot to do with the light source. Artificial light can make bottles appear more red or green. Even worse, photos can be touched up when presented for sale on the internet. Even at bottle shows, light tables can play tricks with colors. You are well advised to judge a bottle in the sunlight. My photos are all taken in the bright West Virginia Sunshine to afford a fair picture for your viewing. Beware of funny colors, and always ask about the light source. Finally, if you are buying at a bottle show or at a shop, ask the owner if you can take the bottle over to the window to look at it. Usually this is no problem. You might find that Red Drakes Bitters is actually Amber!!!

SOME BOTTLE INFORMATION
by Julie Narcovich
Just recently at our January meeting, I took out a soft covered book called, 'BOTTLE IDENTIFICATION'. This book I found to be extremely helpful to me in finding out exactly what kind of bottle I have. It tells of the molds number, size, what they come with and price. This book is old, 1965, but very resourceful. Come to our next meeting and ask Pamela, our Librarian to check it out.
Michael Polak has just come out with his 2003 4th edition of BOTTLES: Identification and Price Guide. Three new chapters have been added, Cobalt Blue Medicine Bottles, Violin Bottles and Museum & Research Resources. The book has been updated as well as now it has 300 black & white photos and 16 pages of color photos. For more info, contact Mike Polak, PO BOX 30328, LONG BEACH, CA, 90853. His web address is www.bottlebible,com or you can email him at bottleking@earthlink.net.
