- Resident
Slacker - again
- Not
that I care, but yes, I missed another newsletter. This
one is a combination January / February edition and you
ought to feel lucky you're getting one at all. I asked
Santa to bring me a large supply of anti-obnoxious pills
for Christmas but, as you can tell, that didn't happen.
- I
really do apologize but had a pretty good reason for not
keeping up with things. My wife and I were away for the
holidays, visiting our new granddaughter in Okinawa, Japan.
I've been asked a million times and no, she's not Japanese.
My son and daughter-in-law are in the Air Force and are
stationed in Okinawa. Joanne and I wanted to see the little
tike before she was old enough to drive so we decided
to spend the holidays over there. I felt like we were
deserting our daughter and son-in-law who live near us
but they ended up using our house to host his relatives,
cook Christmas and New Year's Eve dinner over here, and
gave our DVD and surround sound system a good work out.
And I was worried about someone breaking in while we were
gone......
-
- The
Christmas Party
- We
had a terrific turnout for the Christmas slash Holiday
party in December. I don't have an exact count but believe
there were around thirty six members and guests that showed
up. Of course! It was a free feed!
- I
was pretty disappointed with the food that night, it was
a buffet and a slow night except for us so it wasn't as
fresh as it could have been. I've been to that restaurant
many times and that was the first time I was unhappy with
it. I've been a couple of times since and everything was
excellent. Probably just an off night and of course we
were there!
- Regardless,
everyone seemed to have a good time. I just wish we had
that good of a turnout for the regular meetings!
-
- 2002
Show
- It's
over and done with for another year. I don't have many
specifics but a couple of the dealers I talked to were
very happy with the day. I didn't set up and arrived just
after the doors opened to the public. The parking lot
was full as was inside the hall. It seemed to remain pretty
busy until I left around 1:00pm and I understand it stayed
that way until the show ended. I will give a detailed
report next month when I have some more info on attendance,
dealer reaction, etc.
- One
thing I noticed was the lack of good Rhode Island bottles.
Check that - the lack of RI bottles at all. Very slim
this year. I didn't pick up much, a couple of cheapo sodas
and one clear medicine not listed in the book, but that
was pretty much it. I did miss getting the bargain of
the day, though, an unreported mineral water from Centreville
(or was it Centredale?) that Art Pawlowski managed to
grab before the doors opened. I am waiting for more details
on this bottle and will report on it next month. Other
than that there wasn't much for us RI collectors. Oh,
waaah.
-
- Local
Museum, Local History
- In
my never ending search for RI bottles on eBay, I have
contacted many sellers and buyers informing them of the
club's site, the book, and basically doing doing promotion
and sharing what little knowledge I have of bottles from
our state. I was recently able to get in touch with one
such buyer and found out he is the director of the Central
Falls Public Library and curator of the relatively new
Central Falls Museum. I invited Mr. Tom Shannahan to attend
the show and was pleased that he managed to make it and
introduce himself. We had a good conversation and I plan
to take a ride up and see the museum some time soon.
- Tom
started the museum in 1999 and is still looking for any
CF items that he doesn't have, including bottles to put
on display. There was also some discussion of putting
on programs for each other and that will be further discussed
when we get together.
- They
are in the process of developing a website for the museum
and hope to have it up and running in the near future.
I will post a link to it in the Collectors,
Dealers and Sites Of Interest page when it
becomes available.
