- June
Meeting
by
Pam Sroka
- The
June meeting was the last before our summer break and
meetings will resume in September.
-
- Matt
King and his son, Kevin, came to treat us all to a great
presentation on pottery so the business portion of the
meeting was brief. Mike Basset has rejoined the club after
a short leave. Welcome back, Mike!
-
- The
new book cabinet will be set up soon. Arthur and I picked
it up a few weeks ago and are planning to bring it to
the library as soon as we find time. Meanwhile, it's still
in plastic in the garage.
-
- Contracts
for our show in January will be included with September's
mailed Punty Rod and anyone else interested in attending
the show as a dealer can contact Art Pawlowski and request
a contract. Send him an email at: blobtops@aol.com

- Pottery
Presentation
by
Pam Sroka
- The
presentation on Pottery by Matt King was excellent as
usual. Very informative, actually too much information
for me to take in all at once. That's why this article
will be short. Matt recommended some books on Pottery
which can be found at your local library.
-
- Redware
was in existence from the early 1600's through the 1700's
and was imported from England and Holland. The redware
materials were easy to work with and just as easy to find.
Redware is distinguishable by the lack of glaze on the
bottom.
-
- Porcelain
came next. Tucker and Hall were the popular names in porcelain
in the 1830's.
-
- Yellow
ware is much softer than either of the above and only
made for 50 years or so.
-
- Jugs
made of pottery through the centuries could be also be
identified by their shapes. The 17th century jugs were
an apple shape with a slight flare at the base and had
handles and ribbed necks. The 18th and early 19th century
jugs were more ovoid shape with handles. The the 19th
century jugs were what we see more today, straight sided,
closing in at the neck with handles.
-
- Matt
has quite the collection of both whole pieces and fragments.
Some of the fragments he actually bought! Kevin passed
around some of their books. The items found in the books
were fantastic and found only in museums.
-
- I
highly suggest any one of the books on pottery if only
to see the beauty of the workmanship that went into these
pieces. I was surprised at the large variety, from the
simple to the ornate.
-
- Thank
you Matt! If I have any misinformation in this article,
please feel free to correct me. My notes got a little
confused and if you will give me a copy of your own notes
I will put a larger, more informed article in the September
newsletter.

- Sturbridge
Bottle Show & Sale Report
by
Art Pawlowski
- The
First annual Sturbridge Spring Antique Bottle Show &
Sale on Sunday, May 20th was a very successful event for
a brand new local area show. It was actually a 2 day affair
for many dealers. Pam and I took a ride up late Saturday
evening to find the place and time the ride. It was exactly
an hour and a half away for us. We arrived at 7:15 and
hung out for the 45 minutes before they locked up for
the night. I did a partial set up, mostly milks. A handful
of dealers had completed full table set ups and went all
out.
-
- The
next morning I was back at 7:15 AM and proceeded to set
up two tables. Dave Graci had a sold out show with a good
mix of dealers and glass. Attendance was a little light,
but between dealers, early buyers and general admissions,
I was glued to my tables until noon.
-
- There
were plenty of great historical flasks, colored sodas,
inks, open pontil medicines and a few fine freeblown demijohns.
The highlights that I remember are Kevin Flynn's pickle
jar with a clock face, Dave Fontaine's 3 gallon Providence
oyster jar, and a huge display of centennial bottles and
glass beer steins.
- I
was on a budget and refrained from buying and managed
to lighten my load of 18 milk bottles, an insulator, some
fishing floats, and many other things.
-
- In
my opinion, the show attracted many new faces from New
York, Connecticut, RI and elsewhere. Items were also selling
that usually went unnoticed at other shows. Overall it
was a fun weekend for all who participated.
- I'll
be there next year!
-
- Show
Report Followup
by
Pam Sroka
- I
went to the show at 11:30. There was a good crowd. I was
floored by the place! There were three sides of one of
the two rooms that had open windows. Well, there were
no windows, just the openings. It was airy and you didn't
have to go far for sunlight to look at bottles in. There
was also a pond still with haze from the morning cold
being heated by the sun. It was a sunny, gorgeous day!
- While
I was at our tables, a chipmunk even came to visit. He
looked around a little and before he ran out, I swear
he put a chestnut in his pocket!
-
- I
thought this was a great place for a show, nice location,
sufficient sized hall. I heard rumors that there will
be a tailgate party the Saturday before the show next
year. Wait and see! Next year I will bring my fishing
rod.
-
- Keene
Show
by
Pam Sroka
- Just
a quick note that the Keene show will be back in it's
original spot at the high school this year. Last year
it was moved to the college because of renovations at
the high school.
