Club News

May Meeting
There were eighteen members in attendance including one new member, Chuck Richardson from Cranston. We also had two guests, Jim and Marilyn Charleston, who brought in a bottle which they were hoping to be a great find. As is the case 99% of the time, they were let down easily as it was explained that the labeled, screw cap whiskey wasn't anything they could retire off of. The label was in great shape though, and while not a very desirable bottle may be collectible to someone.

There were four members in attendance who we hadn't seen in a while. John and Bev Barone came up from Westerly and Wes and Dianne Seeman made the trek because they thought there would be a Sandwich "expert". Little did Dianne know that she had brought him. In last month's newsletter, Pam had written that one of our members, now an "expert" because of the recent trip to the museum, would give a presentation at the May meeting. This was meant as sarcasm, and didn't lie in the sense. She did feel bad that some people were misled but after returning home after the meeting, she reread the newsletter and realized it wasn't misleading. Anyway, it was good to see all of you regardless and don't wait so long before you visit us again.

Some of us did bring in things we thought were Sandwich and Pearl's may have won the prize that night. She brought in a very heavy vase which was determined to be more than likely Sandwich. Of course Wes and Dianne brought in several items, a box of shade pulls in a variety of colors and some very large, heavy furniture knobs.

Local Glass Blowers
Pam went onto the web to find some local glass blowers and found quite a few in Providence, one in Cranston, one in Newport, and one in East Greenwich. She gave the list to Steve Berquist and he said he would call them and try to set up something in the way of a club trip, possibly on the night of one of our meetings. Stay tuned.

Bottle Postage Stamps
Postal stamps depicting several types of glass will become available on June 29th. Stanley Sorrentino suggested we get some canceled first issues and sell them at the show next January. Someone is checking into that.

Program Chairperson Wanted
Jan Boyer has been co-program chairman along with Bob Lanpher for several years now. He has been very busy lately and not able to attend the meetings leaving Bob on his own. If you have some good ideas for programs and would spend a few minutes a month setting something up, Bob would appreciate some assistance. He's been doing a great job but two heads are better than one and it makes the job easier with a partner to run things by. Come on down and help out!

Summer Hiatus
We take the summer off so the June meeting will be the last one until September 14th. Pam will send out a reminder in late August about the meeting which will probably have something to do with Summer Finds. Plan on attending as this is usually a really interesting evening.

2000 Show
September's newsletter will include a contract for the Little Rhody show scheduled for January 9, 2000. If you would like a table or tables at the show you MUST RETURN THE CONTRACT IMMEDIATELY. Club members have first shot at tables but the contracts will go out right afterwards and the show will probably sell out at Keene. DO NOT WAIT OR YOU WILL LOSE OUT!!!!!!

FYI
A super rare Willington, CT pickle bottle was sold on eBay, an online auction house, for $44,100! There are only five known examples of this 11" tall pickle and this example was reported as mint condition. There were 57 bids and the bottle carried a reserve of $275. A gentleman from Pennsylvania, Richard Rushton-Clem, purchased the bottle at a yard sale in Massachusetts and an antique store consigned it on eBay for him. The winning bid was by a doctor from Pennsylvania who owns an extensive bottle collection. See? There is still good stuff to be found so visit a yard sale today!

The Diggers
Pam and Art have been digging at a site where Art found a pontilled piece and an Atwoods Quinine Tonic. One of the conditions is that they clean out ALL of the glass and put it somewhere else. There is a lot of glass already on the surface along with cans and conetops by the hundreds. They are reportedly taking their time. Evidently, the dump is from the 40's and hasn't been productive bottle wise but they have been finding glass candy containers, marbles, tin soldiers, and such. Repeat after me..... Willington pickle, Willington pickle.....
