Club News

October Meeting
The presentation for the evening didn't go as smoothly as hoped. A tour through the club's website and online bottle book ran into a few snags as soon as it got underway. The computer the library supplied us with to use for the evening wasn't connected to the internet and it took a while for the attending members to figure out how to get it up and running. Steve Bergquist is usually the one who has taken care of this in the past but unfortunately he wasn't in attendance. However, Rob Fahey came to the rescue. He was able to sign on and get everything running and operational.
The site consists of quite a few different areas consisting of a Home Page (where all of the pertinent information regarding the club in general is kept), the online version of our bottle book, Antique Bottles Of Rhode Island (updated as new information becomes available), a Show Flyer Page (information on our upcoming 2001 bottle show), and an online version of the newsletter, the iPuntyRod (which you are reading at this moment if you're online). Also on the site is a page listing collectors and dealers from our area and other sites that you may find interesting.
To go along with the book, there are a couple of different pages related to RI bottles. One of those is an area called "Advertised Prices". This section reports on asking and selling prices of RI bottles. These prices are taken from bottle magazines, auctions, bottle shows, and anywhere else a bottle is advertised for sale, giving the collector an idea of what bottles from our state are going for.
The other related page is "New Finds". All previously unknown RI bottles are reported here and the page is updated when a new item is discovered and reported. A photograph will also be included if one is available.

It's official! We are now part of the online community with our own website, domain name, and accessibility. Previously Dave Andrews was hosting our site on his personal Earthlink account. All was going along splendidly until an email from Earthlink arrived informing him that he was over his alloted 6MB site allowance and should rectify the situation before the site was shut down. Dave didn't realize how much information he had uploaded in the past six months and got to work clipping enough files to get back under the limit.
However, that left the club in a predicament. Much more information had to be uploaded to the site and it became obvious that the club needed to be on it's own with a larger website. Dave got to work on a fix and contacted Earthlink to check on a separate site. Because he is an Earthlink customer and was going to be the site administrator for the club, a six month half price discount was offered for the club's new site, a savings of $90.
Dave was also required to set up a domain name (which the club had already authorized) which was to end in .org but it went through as .com. For the uninitiated, .org was originally reserved for non-profit organizations such as ourselves. The .com suffix was generally used for commercial sites. Over the past year or so, both have been used in either capacity with .com being the most used and memorable.
All in all this was a nessesary course of action if we are to promote our club in the most efficient way. Already Dave has had several people from other parts of the country contact him regarding the site and several asking about information on RI bottles. One collector commented on the online book saying that it was a great concept. A lot of work, but a great concept and worth the effort as long as it's used.
Go on over and check out the whole site! Dave is monitoring visits to the site and the number of times the individual pages are hit so he will know what pages are the most popular. Eventually this will lead to the removal of any "dogs" and the upgrading of the most visited pages.
And if you have anything to contribute to the site, contact Dave at oaklawn@earthlink.net and send him the information.
