- HOLY
CRAP! A NEW NEWSLETTER! by
Dave Andrews
-
- It's
been over a year since I put out the last online newsletter
and almost as long since I updated ANY of the pages. Quite
a few people have emailed over the past twelve months
asking what was happening, had the site been abandoned,
had the club folded, was I okay (like if I was dead I
was going to respond), and so on. Well, I ain't dead (at
least in the medical sense), the site has not been abandoned
(although the squirrels have made their home in the attic),
the club is still operating (we'll get into that in a
minute), and I can't believe the cowboy got reelected.
(And no, I am not a big Kerry supporter, either.)
-
- I
had been out of work for quite a while and, to be honest,
found out that I am not going to make a good retiree.
Kindly put, I got into a funk, mid-life crisis, male menopause,
whatever you want to call it. No, I didn't get a motorcycle
and multiple tattoos or any of those other regrettably
embarrassing things that some post-50 year old guys do;
I just didn't feel like doing much of anything including
bottles or the site. The last newsletter I managed to
put out was October 2003 and it was a struggle to even
do that, as you can tell by the length of it.
-
- Then,
a miracle. I ended up going back to work the beginning
of December last year, a temporary job that was only supposed
to last 8 weeks that ended up lasting 10 months! I went
from doing nothing to working 70-75 hours, 6-7 days a
week and I actually enjoyed it! I got out of my rut and
became a useful member of society once again, but because
of the amount of hours I was putting in, didn't have time
for much anything outside of the job.
-
- But
the job finally ended October 1 and I have been busy playing
catch up with projects around the house (happy wife),
working on my photography and website (happy me), and
planning to update the entire Little Rhody Bottle Club
website (for the enjoyment of all three of you diehards
who are reading this). Yes, my sarcasm has returned and
I feel like my old self! Boo-yah!
- OCTOBER
MEETING by
Julie Camara
-
- October's
meeting began promptly at 7:30 with 15 members in attendance.
We began our discussion on "old business". I
am waiting for an answer from the library for permission
to add another cabinet for the club. They need to have
their meeting first and discuss it then. We will have
an answer by the end of the month. The By-laws were not
revised. Hopefully we can get to that at November's meeting.
-
- November's
program topic will be on "Insulators". Bob Lanpher
is giving the presentation so bring in your insulators
to the meeting. You might have a rare one! Bob is also
bring in the refreshments for the break.
-
- December's
Christmas party will be held at the library this year.
We had great results last year. It was voted on and approved
for the party to be held as well as the club supplying
a cold cut platter. There will be a sign up sheet at the
next meeting and if you will not be able to attend, please
contact me by either email or snail mail.
-
- Other
items of interest: Mr. Lanpher brought in a full Shaquille
O'Neill six pack that was raffled off. Wes Seemann won
the raffle. Congratulations, Wes! Bill Norton was so kind
as to bring in an original Coca-Cola money bag. Bill picked
a number and one of our new members, Colleen Marzocchi,
won the bag. Both picked the number 13 and come to find
out, the following day, October 13, was both their birthdays!
-
- Arthur
Pawlowski brought in the club's newest book, Bitters Bottles
Supplement by Carlyn Ring and Bill Hamm. Come in and check
it out.
-
- The
club will not be renewing the subscription to BAM Magazine
due to a lack of interest in the magazine.
-
- The
Show and Tell portion of the meeting brought in some great
bottles. Mark Thatcher had a very old and clean peppersauce
from a farm in Coventry. Mark Chappelle is quite the digging
man: he had many great finds like a James Buchanan whiskey
jug, a Samuel Gorton from Warwick, and many more. Mark
Bryant had great bottles and a copper bowl from a dig
in Scituate. Bob Lanpher brought in some more excellent
milks. If you want to see any milk out there, Bob has
it or can get it. He brought in a Hills Grove Dairy from
Warwick, a Foster Dairy out of West Warwick, a John Amaral
from East Providence, a great Cohansey Deerfoot Farms
Jar, an Able Arabian Coffee, a Lyons Delaney Co. jug from
Providence, and finally an odd apricot/amber colored Mason's
jar. Art Pawlowski brought in a mini James Hanley stoneware
jug from Providence.
-
- The
Little Rhody Bottle Club's annual show and sale is coming
fast. We still have 21 more tables to sell. Enclosed is
a contract (mailed newsletter only - contact Julie
if you would like to reserve a table. DRA). I do not have
a list of names and addresses for past renters. The club
is still looking for volunteers for the show. Contact
Julie Camara or sign up at the meeting. If these slots
are not filled and club participation doesn't happen,
the show will not happen!!!
- A
LETTER FROM THE NEWSLETTER EDITOR by
Julie Camara
-
- Currently
I am serving as Secretary, Treasurer and Newsletter Editor.
I don't mind holding these positions although it would
be nice for someone to volunteer for at least one of them.
- I
am also trying to make this show work. In the past two
years I have been a volunteer at the show and did some
online advertising which was asked of me. I have never
put the show together on my own and am not even sure of
all the ins and outs. I have asked club members for their
knowledge and help on this, seeing how they have run the
show before, but I have not received any response. I am
trying my best but the show needs help from other volunteers
besides Bob Lanpher, Ray Lanpher and myself. Volunteers
are needed for advertising, show preparations, handing
out coupons for the show and help at the show itself.
If there is no help soon, there will be no show!!!
- At
this point I am seriously thinking about giving up my
positions and giving up my membership due to constant
ridicule that I have had to deal with including harassing
and prank phone calls. I wanted to join this club three
years ago to learn about bottles, trade them, and have
a great time in the process. I did learn one thing: it's
not like that.
- If
you do not want the club to call it quits, then come to
the next meeting and voice your opinion, volunteer, or
have a great time!
