SEPTEMBER MEETING by Julie Narcovich
The September meeting began with a fantastic presentation by Donald L. Carpenter on the history of the mills along the Pawtuxet Valley River, from Samuel Gorton to Hope Power Brown to Charles Jackson. He and one of our club members, David Thatcher, met back in 1986 at a lecture on the history of Hope Village. I found it so amazing how every mill is linked to the next one and also with the trains. I wish I had enough space to put all of the information we learned from Mr. Carpenter. Thank you so much and we all hope you can return again!
The business meeting started around 8:45 with 19 people in attendance. We had mostly just discussions on our upcoming show. ATTENTION ALL SHOW COMMITTEE MEMBERS: PLEASE ARRIVE AT THE OCTOBER MEETING BY 7:00 PM SO WE CAN QUICKLY ORGANIZE FOR OUR UPCOMING SHOW. If anyone would like to volunteer at the show, contact Art or Rob or come to the next meeting.
We had a great display of Summer Finds. Pam and Art brought in some bottles Pam dug over the summer and a few good finds Art picked up. I brought in a bottle my husband had found while we were walking along near a site that is being cleared. We believe it is a soda bottle from the 1850's. It is green and from BROOKLYN, NY J.F. BATTERMAN. Bill Rose brought in many pontil bottles from a land clearing in Providence. Mark Thatcher found a great piece of antique art glass that he dug. Ed Greer had some great milks in a milk carrier and a very nice large jar. Joe DiRobbio, a guest, brought many great RI bottles in. Hope to see you again soon, Joe! Tom Ross, Bob Lanpher, and Mark Bryant also brought in various finds such as milks, sodas, and medicines. Thank you to everyone and a special thanks to Donald Carpenter!
