Club News
|
- *****ATTENTION*****
- Due
to primary elections being held at the library, it was
necessary to postpone the club meeting. The meeting will
be held on the third Tuesday, September 17th
at the library.
- Catching
Up by
Dave Andrews
- Okay,
I slacked off in June and July and am not doing much better
at the present time, but I figure I better bring you up
to speed before I'm replaced. Yeah, like that'll happen.
Well, actually, the monkey whacking a typewriter with
a baseball bat almost got the position but he misspelled"chalybeate".
-
- May
Meeting by
Pam Pawlowski
- The
evening started off with a guest who brought in some bottles
to sell. None of them were anything great, but there were
a couple that weren't listed in the book. Art and Russell
ended up buying all of them, took the ones they wanted,
and gave away the rest to who ever wanted them.
- Art
Whitford gave a great presentation. Art is a backhoe operator
from Scituate and, needless to say, he finds some things
while he's digging. He has also found items when knocking
down sheds as was the case of a few items he brought in.
One that sticks in my mind resembled a head band with
nails protruding from it. Think the Statue of Liberty's
crown. Apparently it was put on the head of a calf to
wean the calf off of it's mother's milk. When the calf
would try to feed on Mommy, she'd get stuck and kick the
calf away! They couldn't just separate them?
- June
Meeting by
Dave Andrews
- The
meeting was underway by the time I dragged my sorry butt
into the library but what are you going to do, fire me?
Ha!
- I
didn't do an exact count but I believe there were about
18 members in attendance including Wes and Diane Seemann
who I hadn't seen in some time. I was wondering who was
driving that big ol' Caddy parked in the lot with the
license plate BOTTLE on it.
- The
evening's program was "Demijohns" presented
by club president, Art Pawlowski. He brought about two
dozen different sizes, colors, and forms in from his collection
and gave a brief history on this particular type bottle.
Good job, Art!
- Our
newsletter editor, Pam Pawlowski, told us she would no
longer be able to continue in that capacity and we should
find a replacement to take over in September. She had
some lame excuse about having to spend more time playing
with wayward animals and finding orphaned monkeys and
possums good homes. Evidently, she has become involved
as a volunteer working at a new animal shelter in her
hometown of Hope. Yeah, that's the Hope out in the boonies.
Maybe she can find us a bottle digging dog. We all know
there ain't no such thing as a bottle digging cat. Actually,
I'm just picking on Pam because she's bailing on us. Go
ahead, play with your poor, lost animals. Just remember:
bottles don't crap on the living room rug.
- New
Newsletter Editor and Club Secretary by
Dave Andrews
- I
don't know how she accomplished it, but Pam Pawlowski
has finally pawned of her club duties on another unsuspecting
"newbie" in the club. Julie Narcovich has taken
over the reins as Punty Rod newsletter editor and club
secretary. If her name sounds familiar it's because she
also took over the librarian's duties a few months back.
Man, she's got her work cut out for her. Pam used some
lame-o excuse about having to spend more time tending
to abandoned dogs and cats at the newly formed Hope Animal
Shelter and I can hear all of you with soft hearts going,
"Awwwwwww."
- Anyway,
a big "Thank You!" to Julie for stepping in
and taking on these necessary club duties.
- And
here's a note from Julie:
Hello
Everyone,
Our very
first meeting after the summer has been postponed.
Due to the fact that the Pontiac Library will be having
a primary that night and security will not allow us
to have our meeting. It has been changed from the
second Tuesday, September 10, 2002, to September 17,
2002 at 7:30 p.m. Art has cleared this date with Ms.
Rumolowizc from the library.
The topic
that night will be "Summer Finds" so bring
in anything you would like that you came across this
summer. I have a few bottles that I had found and
am eager to bring them in! Oh, by the way, my name
is Julie Narcovich and I am the new newsletter editor.
This is my first, so if you have any good advise or
information you would like me to add to our newsletter,
please email me at Narcovich@aol.com. I hope many
of you will be attending this meeting. I am looking
forward to meeting members of the club that I have
not yet met! Don't forget, you are always welcome
to bring a friend. Maybe they can bring something
in.
One more
thing, I was in an antique shop in Warren on Sunday,
August 18, when I was talking with a gentleman about
my RI bottles. He said if you want to see bottles,
go to the Offcenter Coffee House at 30 Child Street
in Warren (401-245-9119) and ask whoever is working
if you could see 'Bobarino's bottle collection'. I
believe the collection is owned by Thomas Byrne, the
owner of the coffee house.
Anyway,
the waitress took my family and me to the basement.
As we went into this small room I couldn't believe
my eyes! Go ahead and check it out if you can or maybe
we can meet at the coffee house/ Anyone interested
in meeting there one Sunday afternoon, email me. Maybe
Sunday, September 1, 2002? 2 p.m.?
Thank
you. See you soon.
Julie
Narcovich, Newsletter Editor/Secretary

- National
Bottle Museum
- In
May we voted to donate $100 to the NBM. Usually we make
a donation every year but for some reason it didn't happen
last year and we were removed from their roster of contributors.
Okay, who slacked off?
- Pontiac
Library
- We
received a Thank You card from the librarians for the
donations from the club. We should thank them more often
as we have free use of the meeting room every month and
they have been very accommodating over the years. The
club very much appreciates the generosity of the Pontiac
Library and it's staff.
- Website
News by
Dave Andrews
- I've
been watching the stats for the website and we have been
averaging about 140 individual visitors per day. This
number is not "hits", which are the files (pages,
photos, etc.) accessed, but actual different people who
have found the site and paid us a visit. Some of those
visitors have written inquiring about RI bottles they
have, histories, value, rarity, etc., and some have written
to voice their opinions on the site itself. So far, everything
has been positive and quite a few people are amazed at
how much information we have made available.
- Also,
we have switched internet service providers. The company
we are currently hosted with, Featureprice.com, offered
much more than what we were getting with our former provider
for a much reduced price. The company was highly rated
both in performance and value, and we've only been with
them since the beginning of August so we'll see how it
goes.
- A
couple of benefits that can now be offered to club members
are free email accounts through the club and personal
webspace. If you have a webpage you want hosted, let me
know and I'll help you through the process.

Online Book News
by
Dave Andrews
- Some
changes are coming to Antique Bottles Of Rhode Island.
As I mentioned a month or so ago, the numbering system
will be overhauled and hopefully will be of a more permanent
system than what's there now. There are several possibilities
and we will be working to find the one that is best suited
for our purposes.
- Another
change will be the removal of all applied color label
type bottles from the listings. This will include medicines,
sodas, and any other bottle with this type label that
is currently listed. A separate section will be added
in the future dedicated to this type of collectible bottle
from RI.
- Over
the past 4 or 5 months many new listings and photos have
been added thanks in part to the efforts of Russ Archambault.
We were a little weak in the Woonsocket bottles and that's
Russ' specialty. He's been bring me crates of Woonsocket
bottles to be catalogued, photographed, and added to the
book with still more to come.
- Two
other collectors, Dave Gates from Wakefield and Dave Smith
from Westerly, have consented to having their respective
RI bottle collections photographed for the book.
- I
also have spoken to our resident beer collector, Steve
Bergquist, and he has agreed to let me photo his RI beer
bottles. Roughly 85% of the beers listed in the Soda,
Beer & Mineral Water category are from Steve's collection.
- All
of this will take some time so stay tuned. (The wife says
I have to find a job, one that pays me enough to cover
the mortgage and my Master Card so it looks like I won't
have all of this "free time" I've enjoyed over
the past year working on the book and the site.)
- Show
Report - NE Antique Bottle Club
by
Matt King
- I
had not been able to do this show for quite a few years
because it conflicts with another antique show I do, but
after some badgering and a head lock, Jack Pelletier convinced
me to sign on. Honestly, I was looking forward to this
about as much as a dental appointment. This show was a
lot of fun at Eliot (Remember the days? This was a classic
NE show!), but that was years ago and it seemed to be
sinking every time it was moved. But that was then and
it's been about five years since I've done it and, frankly,
I'M IMPRESSED!!!
- I
think I stepped back in time to the Eliot show. I showed
up to set up late so I missed the morning's antics, but
I had a fresh batch of bottles and sold well for a guy
that got there at 10 A.M. (story for another day). And
then I bought at noon or so. There were still pickings.
- The
hall (located in Portland, Maine) is super clean and well
lit and the food..... Don't leave this hall without trying
the food!!! Remember, it's the Italian Club and they'll
live up to your expectations.
- There
were a host of faces I was unfamiliar with and it's great
to see fresh faces. This bottle thing is alive and well!
The merchandise was excellent. Jeff Noordsey had a fine
selection of fine New England bottles as did Leo Goudreau
and Rick "RC" Cirillo. You can sell, you can
buy, and it's very well run.
- My
compliments to Jack and crew. I hope to be back next year.
