By 1864, Seth was putting out
many of his own medicines and was president of his
own laboratory, the Dr. Seth Arnold Medicinal Corp.
which was located at 64 Sullivan Street in
Woonsocket. His son, Seth Jr., was employed as a
clerk at that time and in 1880 became the
corresponding secretary of the firm.
Among the many medicines that
the firm produced, the most popular were DR. SETH
ARNOLD'S BALSAM, used for treating cholera,
dysentery, diarrhea, etc., and DR. SETH ARNOLD'S
COUGH KILLER, for coughs, colds, pneumonia, asthma,
croup, malaria, inflammation of the stomach, and
malignant fevers. Also popular were a SOOTHING AND
QUIET CORDIAL, a remedy which was good for
infantile pains of the stomach and bowels, and
which also induced sleep, and an INDIAN VEGETABLE
SUGAR COATED BILIOUS PILLS used for headaches,
diseases of the stomach, and purifying of the
blood. In 1868, Arnold sold the right to
manufacture Arnold's Balsam to Gilman Bros. in
Boston for the amount of $12,500.
Circa 1884, Olney Arnold
became president and treasurer of the company. He
began dealing in other proprietary medicines, and
the company's address changed to 72 Sullivan Street
in Woonsocket. By 1888, the Dr. Seth Arnold
Medicine Corp. Proprietary Medicines was located at
72 Park Avenue in Woonsocket and shortly after
moved to 154 Park Avenue.
In 1892, Dr. Seth Arnold died
leaving sons Olney and Seth, Jr. in control of the
company. Sometime between his father's death and
1897, Seth, Jr. became deeply involved with a
livery stable, boarding, feeding, and grooming
horses at 93 Front Street in Woonsocket. He moved
to Sterling, Massachusetts in 1989, but returned to
Woonsocket when Olney died. The Seth Arnold company
was located at 358 Park Avenue at that time. Seth
Jr. moved to New Haven, Connecticut in 1906 and
shortly thereafter sold his father's company. The
entire operation was moved to Boston, Massachusetts
where it became part of Gilman Bros., 100 Shawmut
Avenue.
