Seth Arnold

Dr. Seth Arnold was listed in the N. E. Mercantile Union Directory of 1849 as an eclectic physician and a patent medicine manufacturer located in the Globe Village in Smithfield, Rhode Island.

By 1864, Seth was putting out many of his own medicines and was president of his own laboratory, the Dr. Seth Arnold Medicinal Corp. which was located at 64 Sullivan Street in Woonsocket. His son, Seth Jr., was employed as a clerk at that time and in 1880 became the corresponding secretary of the firm.

Among the many medicines that the firm produced, the most popular were DR. SETH ARNOLD'S BALSAM, used for treating cholera, dysentery, diarrhea, etc., and DR. SETH ARNOLD'S COUGH KILLER, for coughs, colds, pneumonia, asthma, croup, malaria, inflammation of the stomach, and malignant fevers. Also popular were a SOOTHING AND QUIET CORDIAL, a remedy which was good for infantile pains of the stomach and bowels, and which also induced sleep, and an INDIAN VEGETABLE SUGAR COATED BILIOUS PILLS used for headaches, diseases of the stomach, and purifying of the blood. In 1868, Arnold sold the right to manufacture Arnold's Balsam to Gilman Bros. in Boston for the amount of $12,500.

Circa 1884, Olney Arnold became president and treasurer of the company. He began dealing in other proprietary medicines, and the company's address changed to 72 Sullivan Street in Woonsocket. By 1888, the Dr. Seth Arnold Medicine Corp. Proprietary Medicines was located at 72 Park Avenue in Woonsocket and shortly after moved to 154 Park Avenue.

In 1892, Dr. Seth Arnold died leaving sons Olney and Seth, Jr. in control of the company. Sometime between his father's death and 1897, Seth, Jr. became deeply involved with a livery stable, boarding, feeding, and grooming horses at 93 Front Street in Woonsocket. He moved to Sterling, Massachusetts in 1989, but returned to Woonsocket when Olney died. The Seth Arnold company was located at 358 Park Avenue at that time. Seth Jr. moved to New Haven, Connecticut in 1906 and shortly thereafter sold his father's company. The entire operation was moved to Boston, Massachusetts where it became part of Gilman Bros., 100 Shawmut Avenue.
