Carpenter & Wood

Alfred J. Carpenter was an enameler living at 104 Public Street in Providence in 1877. After several changes in address he was residing at 38 Friendship Street in 1886.

In 1889 his business became Carpenter & Wood Enamelers having taken Edgar B. Wood in as partner.

Carpenter died in 1904 and Wood continued the business, which was still located at the Friendship Street address, until his own death in 1908.

The company still existed under the Carpenter & Wood name for years after located at various addresses in Providence. In 1922 they became incorporated and were located at 27 Mathewson Street as enamelers for the jewelry trade.

In 1928 the company was relocated to a former address, 11 Calender Street, with Thomas H. O'Brien as secretary. They were then known as vitrifiable enamelers. This type of enameling was used around 1930 as a colored enamel label which replaced the mold embossing in bottles and glass.

Carpenter & Wood was around for many more years listed at 15 Cedar Street in Providence until sometime around 1977 when they went out of business.
