James S. Hazard was a bottler
and manufacturer of carbonated beverages in
Newport, Rhode Island circa 1847. He was producing
many different beverages including lemon soda,
birch beer, sarsaparilla, tonic beer, pear and
apple ciders, and selling different mineral
waters.
Around 1867 he became an
agent for George P. Harvey & Co. at Bath Road
In Newport.
By 1875 he had taken on
Harvey and Thomas Blackler as partners, and the
company was known as James S. Hazard & Co. They
relocated the company from Newport across the
Narragansett Bay to Westerly at 75 Pierce Street.
It was here that they began manufacturing HAZARD'S
NERVE FOOD which was supposed to restore the nerve
tissues and invigorate the whole system, and
continued the manufacture of their Belfast Ginger
Ale.
