Louis H. Meyer ran a saloon
at 1102 High Street in Olneyville Square in
Providence in 1893. By 1897 he was a wholesale
bottler and dealer of lager beers, ales and
porters, and was then located at 1 Library Court
also in Olneyville Square but this part of
Olneyville was considered a part of
Johnston.
One year later, Meyer
relocated to 15 - 17 Hartford Avenue, Olneyville
Square, Johnston.
By 1905, the company was
under the name Louis H. Meyer & Co. of which
Meyer was general manager and treasurer. The
company was still dealing in the same items and had
added different types of liquors to the
list.
A 1911 Rhode Island report to the General Assembly from the Commisioner of Industrial Statistics lists L.H. Meyer Co. located at 62 Hartford avenue in Providence.
The company became
incorporated in 1912 and Meyer retired from the
business in 1920.
Note: At the time the photo below was taken, L.H. Meyer Co. Inc. was located at 62 Hartford Avenue. This had to have been between 1912 and 1920 as Meyer incorporated in 1912 and that is reflected in the company name on the building. The gentleman in the photo is actually Louis Meyer himself according to great granddaughters Karen Anne Kolling and Marion Hanf DeTora who have been extremely helpful in supplying the photo below and additional information used here. |
