Ochee Spring Water

In 1874, Horatio Angell of Johnston, RI was suffering from kidney trouble. He tried the remedies recommended by many physicians but experienced no relieve. He had all but given up hope when a friend recommended a clairvoyant who was widely known in the Boston region. Seeking the help of a clairvoyant was a custom of the era, so Mr. H. C. Hull, a trance clairvoyant, was consulted.

While in his trance, Mr. Hull told his new patient that buried on the Angell farm was a spring which could easily be reached and whose waters would cure Horatio's ailments. Horatio returned home, followed Mr. Hull's directions, and uncovered the spring. After drinking the spring's water, Horatio began feeling better and was eventually restored to good health. So pleased was he with the water's benefits that he began bottling the spring water. By 1891 he had a thriving business going with an office located at 22 Peck Street in Providence. He called his product The Celebrated Ochee Spring Water.

In 1898 Horatio passed away and his wife and son continued to manage the business.

The office moved to 14 Hay Street, Providence in 1904 and in 1915 the company incorporated with Arthur P. Angell as president. The younger Angell expanded the product line to include ginger ale, sarsaparilla, and a variety of carbonated beverages.

The company went out of business in 1923.
